We like to call ourselves small but mighty. With a team of just 25 staff, we work tirelessly to welcome pets into our shelter and provide them with the care, comfort and love the deserve.

Everything we do is to improve and foster the connection between humans and animals, but it doesn’t end with just adoption. It includes a robust foster program, impactful volunteer opportunities, community events, affordable veterinary care and so much more.
Our Commitment to Homeless Animals
At Five Acres Animal Shelter, we believe every animal deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, safe, and fulfilling life. We are proud to annually place 98% of the pets who come through our doors.
Five Acres is considered a “no-kill” animal shelter. Being a no-kill shelter means that we do not euthanize healthy or treatable animals simply because the shelter is full, an animal has been here for a certain amount of time, or because of an animal’s breed, age, appearance, or length of stay.
Our goal is always to provide the medical care, behavioral support, enrichment, rehabilitation, foster care, and time necessary to give each animal the best possible opportunity for a successful outcome.
However, being no-kill does not mean that euthanasia never occurs. There are circumstances in which humane euthanasia may be necessary to prevent suffering or protect the safety of people and other animals.
At Five Acres, euthanasia is considered only in serious and rare circumstances, including:
- When an animal is too medically ill or injured for available medical support to provide a humane quality of life
- When an animal presents an ongoing and significant safety risk to the public that cannot be responsibly managed
- When an animal has an extensive bite history that indicates a serious and unmanageable risk to people
- When an animal’s quality of life has irreversibly deteriorated beyond meaningful intervention
These decisions are never made based on space, time, breed, convenience, or age. They are made only after careful consideration of the animal’s individual circumstances, available treatment and behavioral options, quality of life, and the safety of the community. These decisions are made by a team of professionals, including medical and behavioral staff, who have invested time, care and love to the animals we care for every day.
No-kill is not a promise that no animal will ever be euthanized. It is a commitment that we will invest every resource at our disposal to help each animal receive the second chance they deserve.
